Patent absurdity

Richard Stallman explains in the Guardian how copyright law on software could ruin future creativity.

He shows the effect current copyright law would have had on Victor Hugo's 'les Miserables' had today's laws been passed in the 19th century. Basically, all literature would have stopped.

This is the threat to the future of creativity today. Click me

These laws serve the interests of "Patent parasite companies - businesses that produce nothing except threats and lawsuits - are growing larger."

HM Queen doesn't like Sony remote controls

The Queen has trouble with Sony remote controls. Just like me.

"When the queen doesn't like your products you know you're in trouble.

Howard Stringer was officially made Sony Corp.'s new chief executive officer (CEO) Wednesday at a company shareholder meeting in Tokyo. In remarks about how he plans to turn the troubled electronics maker around, the Welsh-born executive put a new spin on the mantra 'the customer is king.'

He recounted a luncheon with the U.K.'s Queen Elizabeth II, where the conversation turned to Sony's products.

'I have a lot of trouble with your remote controls,' The Queen told him, according to Stringer. 'Too many arrows.' "

Mind Control Made Simple

Control your devices with thought alone. Mark Frauenfelder reports in 'The Feature' that a Silicon Valley company is developing a technology that uses electrical signals produced by the brain and eye movement to control electronic devices.
"But how can you actually control a device using your brain? Part of the answer lies in biofeedback -- training yourself to change the frequency of your brainwaves. For decades, people have been controlling their brainwaves using biofeedback monitors. By attaching electrodes to your scalp and looking at a realtime display of your brain activity (an EEG), you can learn to change the frequency at will.

The other part of the answer is EOG (Electro-oculogram), or eye movement. While this isn't really using your mind to control the device, it is a fairly automatic way to generate a small electrical signal that NeuroSky's system can measure. The company says it has acquired proprietary algorithms originally developed in Russia that can covert and combine EEG and EOG signals into direction control -- useful for navigating a heads-up communication display in a car perhaps, or for training cross-hairs on a cartoon alien in a video game."
