Slap-to - the latest tune by Oingo

Here's my latest tune on Acid Planet. It's not finished yet, but I thought it was about time I uploaded it... So this is the tune I've been fiddling around with for the past 3 months. Give me some feedback on how to finish it. Slap-to (click here)

Send 1Mb files by email?

Simple and good this one. You upload a file onto YouSendIt's server. Email the link to your recipient. Your recipient can then download it. It stays on the YouSendIt server for seven days. Much better than sending an email with a 1Mb attachment. YouSendIt (click here)

Mad Jap Goths

For 'way-out-there' fashion see this site dedicated to the fans of Japanese band, Dir en grey. There's Kimono clad Cruella deVilles, PVC Nazis, Victorian black-widow brides, punked up Little-bo-peeps...and a nurse. Click here

Here's the band's 'what's new' page on their site Dir en grey (click here)

While you're there check out the video of their latest release 'saku'. Hmmm.

UK officially goes for open source and Creative Commons

Two articles from the Guardian about recent significant e-policy changes in the UK... Things are looking up.

A cool embrace
The Treasury's Office of Government Commerce have announced that open source software is a "viable desktop alternative for the majority of users". Move over Microsoft. Click

Creative comfort
The Creative Commons license is being introduced in the UK. Can't be bad. Click

What's the 'Creative Commons'? Here are some links to sort you out...

I've got Creative Commons button at the bottom of this blog. Scroll down and have a look.

Common People - William Shatner version

A few months ago, I found a really crappy snippet of this tune. I'm delighted to say that I've now found a more hi-fi version. William Shatner and Joe Jackson 'Common People' on NME.COM

Never Forget: Internets Vets for Truth

Absolutely the definitive websource for everything to do with the Bush/Kerry election. It's a kind of archive of everything on the Web about both candidates.Never Forget: Internets Vets for Truth

It has the full version of Eminem's anti-Bush 'Mosh' on mp3, Quicktime and BitTorrent... with the full lyrics.

It's got the Jon Stewart 'Crossfire' interview, Britney Spears being a bimbo for the Bush, Condi Rice's damning 9/11 testimony, a smorgasboard of goodies. All free, naturally.

To quote from the site:

"Our goal is to present you with these clips to help you make an informed choice next Tuesday.

We hope you enjoy, and draw your own conclusions.

Please help spread the word. Tell a friend, a relative, a co-worker, or Ohio.

And to paraphrase Jon Stewart, please, please, please vote."

Reaction from the US to the Guardian's Clark County project

The Guardian (UK) suggested that some of its readers write to undecided voters in Ohio. In the first three days, more than 11,000 people asked for addresses. Read the responses they got.
Guardian Unlimited (click here)

Ok. So maybe they should have kept their noses out of this. But some of the reactions are a bit scary.

Useful stuff for your computer

Now I've finished studying for this year, I thought I'd post something useful here (for once). So here's a list of some useful computer stuff.

1. Ad-Aware SE
Lavasoft have just released the latest version of Ad-Aware. It's free, just like previous versions. For all your ad-bot, mal-ware and scum-ware woes. Ad-Aware SE (click here)

Check out Lavasoft's Ad-Aware 'add-ons'. There's one that switches off Windows Messenger (yes, you want to do that). Lavasoft 'add ons' (click here)

2. Google Desktop
Install this on your PC so that you can search all your files on all your drives.

Simply type a word or phrase into the Google Desktop search box and it'll instantly return all docs and ppts and emails (etc) with your chosen word/phrase in it. Where Google normally searches every word on the web, Google Desktop searches out every word on your computer. It's unbelievably good. Try it. Google Desktop (click here)

3. Furl and Spurl
Either of these two web-based apps will store all your favourites/bookmarks online. Why? So that you can access your bookmarks at home, work or anywhere else. That's why.

Actually, there's more. They also keep the webpage alive for you even if the original link goes dead. So your old favourite links won't ever go 404 on you again. I think this feature might also mean that you can access web-pages from subscription sites long after your subscription has expired. Hmm, Copyright? Oh well.

There's not much to choose between the two. Furl looks better (I think). Spurl has multi layered folders and is a bit more useable (I think). Up to you.

4. DeadLink
On the subject of links going dead in your favourites folder... Ferret out those deadlinks (and doubles) with... Deadlink (click here)

5. A9
Amazon have used Google's technology (and some) to make a rather nice search engine interface. A9 (click here)

6. Mozilla Firefox
If you are still using Internet Explorer, you need your head examined.
Why Firefox? (click here)
More on 'why Firefox?' (click here)

Get Firefox HERE

Check out the 'extensions page' for customising the functionality of the browser. Mine has Ad-block, Image-zoom, Copy-URL & Copy-Plain-Text, and opens fullscreen (single window & autohide). It rocks.

Check out the 'themes' page for modifying the look and feel. I've got Noia 2 eXtreme, but GrayModern also looks great.

7. Skype
