Foreign media take more pot shots at Singapore

Last week it was hanging, this week it's maid abuse. Singapore's image has been taking a media thumping recently.

This week the BBC are highlighting a report by Human Rights Watch called "Maid to Order - Ending abuses against migrant domestic workers in Singapore". The report explains that Singapore's foreign domestic workers do not get the same legal protection as Singapore nationals and cites evidence where this inequality has lead to abuses. However...

"The authors say Singapore is by no means the worst offender in the region, but they argue that this tightly controlled city state could improve conditions very easily, giving many thousands of vulnerable women greater control over their lives."

I reckon Singapore is well placed to take the lead on this in Asia. As for the pot shots... it's all part of becoming a member of the 'Developed Nations' club. Let's see how the Singapore media handle this one.
